Don’t Label Me: LGBTQIA+ Ally
Our Center College Library in Laurel, Maryland has been a loud and proud Secure House and Ally for ALL of our LGBTQIA and Neurodivergent students for decades. We have procured each individual properly reviewed, requested, intriguing, and middle school authorised fiction and non-fiction ebook on these matters. I daresay we have one of the largest collections all over! We have Safe and sound Room signals close to, a rainbow narwhal (pictured previously mentioned) and groupings of textbooks on show all the time.
I have also blogged about our support of our various communities.
BUT… I have powerful opinions about placing a Style label on these textbooks. I am truly cognizant that some of my Center Schoolers are curious or questioning to learn more about but usually are not completely ready to out by themselves. To their peers and to their mother and father. This is however a different purpose I am versus Genrefication. I know, amongst some of my other Long run Ready Librarians this is a controversial subject matter. But to team all these guides in a person location usually means that young ones could be Pretty HESITANT to gravitate and browse that spot of the Library.
I try to remember back in the 80’s in college, a mate of mine asked me to make a pilgrimage to the iconic Lambda Soaring bookstore in Baltimore simply because they did not want to go in there on your own. We even drove about the block to “case the be a part of!” before parking and heading within. So I can just think about how a teen who has issues about their gender identification in Center Faculty may not be all set to hang out with individuals “labeled” textbooks in my Faculty Library.
I Will not Like Labels
Some publications also span concerning quite a few genres. What if you have a reserve that has a queer key character but there is also other factors to the tale? Like a mystery? Or suspense? How lots of style stickers are you heading to set on there? Where are you heading to shelve it?
I am likely to shelve it by author and style label it Secret. For the reason that also, what does it make a difference if the main character who is solving a secret is homosexual both – except to exhibit kiddos that persons of ANY orientation or gender identification can do do Something, suitable? Not narrowed down to a label.
Instead, I am going to just use the Teen label. Very a great deal handles every little thing. Except that Mystery reserve.
